Nativo Lopez stuck in jail for four days

Latino-rights activist and former Santa Ana schools trustee Nativo Lopez stayed locked in jail through last weekend, in what was apparently a snafu on the part of the legal system.

Lopez, who is facing charges of voter fraud based on allegations that he voted in Los Angeles while living in Santa Ana, had a
mental competency hearing Thursday. When he refused to identify himself, he was taken into custody, according to court officials.

As I reported Friday, the court told me that he’d subsequently been found to be competent and was released from jail on his own recognizance.

Not so, according to a statement released by the Mexican American Political Organization, which he heads.
